Getting to Know Roxann Yarges

Title: Media Coordinator
Here since: December 2016

What do you do at SKAR?
I work on reconciling all of the monthly media invoices and buying print advertising for our client, ETMC Regional Healthcare System. I also assist with a variety of media research projects.

Tell us about your interesting career path that led you here.
After finishing my marketing degree, I landed a job working as an assistant for a small advertising agency. That’s when I realized my love for this industry. I also had the opportunity to work as a media coordinator at West Corporation for almost four years, which taught me even more about media and advertising. My goal is to continue to learn and grow as an advertising/media professional.

What do you do in your spare time?
Spare time? What’s that? I enjoy baking and doing yoga. I also really love visiting the mountains and the beach. I find that being in nature is so good for the soul.

What is your favorite TV show of all time?
That’s a really tough question. There have been so many good ones, it’s hard to choose just one. I might have to go with “The X-Files” when it was in its prime in the 1990s.

What makes you laugh uncontrollably?
Stupid humor and sarcasm. I like when people don’t take themselves too seriously and know how to have fun.

If you had to give one piece of advice to someone getting into the ad business, what would it be?
I would tell them to be open-minded and to learn to approach problems with a creative mind. A love for learning is also very helpful since advertising trends and technologies are always changing.

What makes you madder than a wet hen?
Dealing with rude people! I just can’t stand it when people are rude and treat others badly just because they are having a bad day.

What is your biggest fear?
My biggest fear is being swallowed up by a sinkhole. What could be scarier than being here one minute and vanishing into a sinkhole the next? Seriously, it’s the scariest thing I have ever heard of!

What do you like about living in Omaha?
I like how everything is so easily accessible here. You can drive from one end of the city to the other in about 20 to 30 minutes. And we are spoiled silly with such good restaurant choices. We have it really good here compared to some other cities I’ve visited.

What was your favorite toy as a kid?
My roller skates, hands down! I probably gave my mom heart failure every time I would go flying down our street, which on was a large hill.

What skills do you need to succeed in your job?
Good negotiation and communication skills are very important when buying media. Liking details and thinking creatively to solve problems are also good traits to have.

Name someone you admire.
I really admire my parents. I appreciate their strength and everything they have done to give their family a good life. I respect how they always have put their family first and instilled those same values in me.

Name something about yourself that people might say, “Huh, that’s mildly interesting.”
I got married barefoot on a beach in another country. It was the most amazing experience!
