Meet the 2016 Summer Interns
Social Media Intern
Brianna Olson is our social media intern for the summer of 2016, working Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, mostly on Sue Bee Honey. This is her first internship. She’ll be a senior this fall at UNO, where she majors in journalism, minors in communication studies and has concentrations in advertising and public relations. “I’ve always loved to write,” Brianna said, and she credits a teacher at Millard South High School with opening her eyes to a writing career. Brianna exercises those skills at UNO’s Gateway student newspaper, where she’s now online editor, and you can sample her talent – and glimpse her wide-ranging taste in movies – at olsonmovieblog.wordpress.com. She also has worked in the retail apparel industry – she’s now at Beyourself Boutique (where she also handles social media) and has worked at Francesca’s and American Eagle. Brianna lives on campus in the dorms and in her spare time enjoys shopping, hanging out with her sorority sisters and traveling – especially to the East Coast (New York City, Washington, Boston) to see her boyfriend, Beau Fultz, a member of the Air Force stationed in New Jersey.
Emily Applegate works Monday through Thursday as our media department intern. She comes to SKAR after an inspiring semester of studying in London and traveling throughout Europe, and after her graduation in 2017 she’d like to find a job that involves traveling: “I just want to go back!” Although Emily is from Naperville, Illinois, both parents are Cornhuskers, so she came to the University of Nebraska–Lincoln to work toward a Bachelor of Science degree in advertising and public relations, with concentrations in business and English. Last summer she was an intern for Ribfest, a Fourth of July event in Naperville to raise funds for victims of domestic abuse, and she helped promote the musical acts. She also has worked as a barista at a Lincoln Scooter’s and as a server at a Mexican restaurant in Naperville. She said she’s eager to learn about SEO, SEM, Google AdWords and the principles of media buying during her summer with us. Emily is living here in Omaha (rent-free!) with the family of a college friend, and in her spare time enjoys hiking, running and cooking.
Eric Smits is our morning receptionist this summer while he prepares for his sophomore year of working toward a mechanical engineering degree at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. Eric, brother of account manager Sara Smits Wilson, said he developed his interest in learning how machines work while growing up watching his father fix things. He plans to join the Navy after graduating and might even follow his dad’s footsteps by working on nuclear submarines. A graduate of Bellevue West High School, Eric was a competitive swimmer who considered swimming scholarship offers from various schools, but since none also had a good mechanical engineering program, he chose Wichita State University’s academic scholarship. This fall, when he takes up UNL’s scholarship, he plans to live in a dorm and later a fraternity house. Eric now lives with his folks and in his free time likes to play soccer, Frisbee (golf and Ultimate) and regular golf as well as swim recreationally and be with his new puppy, Emmie, a Sheltie (miniature collie). After working at SKAR, Eric takes Calculus II at UNO in the afternoon.
Graphic Design Intern
Erica Blumeyer works Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays in our art department; it’s her first internship. She recently earned an associate degree after two years of study at the Creative Center, and in 2017 she expects to get a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in graphic design (she creates realistic drawings in colored pencil and charcoal and also paints in acrylics). Erica calls herself a minimalist – “I love simple designs, the cleaner the better” – and her dream job is to be a creative director for an ad agency. She comes from Matlock, Iowa, and always has loved drawing and wanted a career in art. She lives with her fiance (they plan a 2018 wedding), Tyrel Morales, a criminal justice major at UNO, and works part-time as a sales associate at Von Maur. She’s also been a day care center worker, cake decorator, bartender and grocery store employee. She enjoys doing makeup artistry (prepping friends for prom), traveling, cooking (Pinterest is a favorite recipe source) and playing with her pets: Booker, a Jack Russell terrier, and Tuffy, a cat.
Account Service Intern
Rachel Green, our summer intern in account service, is working on the Nebraska Lottery, ETMC and Sue Bee Honey accounts. She recently received a bachelor’s degree in strategic communications with a minor in business administration and emphases in advertising and public relations from the University of South Dakota. In an internship with Bozell last summer she worked on planning for the College World Series, interacting with customers for First National Bank’s “Unforgettable Firsts” campaign and producing commercials for H&H Kia and Chevrolet. She was an unpaid marketing intern for KMTV in 2014, she worked in the sports marketing department at USD and she was involved in DECA at Millard South High School. Rachel was born in Illinois, and her family moved around before settling in Omaha when she was in seventh grade. Rachel began working out in college and liked it so much she became a certified personal trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine; she might work part-time in the field. Rachel lives in an apartment with friends (no, not Monica, Phoebe, etc.; that show started after she was born) and enjoys bicycling, roller blading, going to the zoo and playing with her yellow lab, Riley.
